WhatsApp will share with Facebook the phone number of its users, as well as information about the frequency with which they use the instant messaging service.
The messaging company, owned by Facebook since 2014, today announced a change in its terms of use and privacy policy that includes this exchange of information between WhatsApp and the social network.
"As a subsidiary company of Facebook, in the coming months we will begin to share information that allows us to better coordinate and thus improve the experience between services, which is a typical practice among companies that are acquired by others," Whatsapp said in a statement.
Thus, the social network will have access to the telephone number that each user uses to verify their WhatsApp account, as well as data on the frequency with which they use the application -among them, the last hour of connection-.
According to the company, they will share this information with different objectives: obviously improve advertising effectiveness by serving ads that are more relevant to Facebook users and suggestions to connect with known people and, on the other hand, combat abuses and unwanted messages on WhatsApp.
The service recognizes that other Facebook affiliates, such as Instagram, may also use WhatsApp information for "diverse activities," such as suggesting which accounts to follow.
Users of the messaging service may refuse to have their data used to "improve experiences regarding advertisements and products", but not to let Facebook know your phone number and activity patterns on WhatsApp.
"At the moment we have no plans to share with Facebook other optional information you provide, such as your state, name or profile picture, nor do we save your messages once they were delivered," the company emphasizes, insisting that despite the changes will operate "as an independent service".
In addition, he emphasizes that encrypted messages will continue to be private -also for the eyes of WhatsApp- and that he will not sell, share or give users' phone numbers to advertisers.
Now, the connection of the telephone numbers with the Facebook systems will favor that the users see announcements of companies with which they have already communicated previously.
The clients of WhatsApp will receive as of today a notification with the new terms of privacy, moment from which they will have 30 days to accept them in case they wish to continue using the application.
This is the first change in the privacy policy of the service in four years. According to WhatsApp, these modifications respond to their "plans to test communication alternatives between users and companies in the coming months", as well as to reflect that they are a company owned by Facebook.
That communication with companies will contemplate assumptions such as an airline reporting, via WhatsApp, the cancellation of a flight or a bank of a fraudulent transaction.
Even so, he wanted to make it clear that there will still be no ads on WhatsApp and he has promised that the communicative experience with companies will avoid unwanted messages.
After the announcement made by WhatsApp, the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) has confirmed that it is analyzing the changes in the privacy policy of the service.
"As is usual when there are concerns about the impact on privacy and data protection of citizens, the Spanish Agency for Data Protection is studying the changes introduced by the courier company in its terms of use and privacy policy ", sources from the AEPD have indicated to Efe.
