Samsung Gear S3: smart watches continue to evolve

The improvement of the battery, a more refined design and new sensors are the main strengths of this device, which approximates its appearance to that of traditional watches

Although they have been on the market for several years, the devices known as wearable - also known as wearables - are still products that seek their identity. The Berlin IFA held until the next day 7 in the German capital has become a good thermometer to know the maneuvers of different manufacturers to turn things like activity wristbands or smart watches into a mass product and not in an exotic gadget.

So one of the early risers of this technological conclave, the most important in the world next to the CES in Las Vegas and the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, has been Samsung. The South Korean factory has presented its Gear S3, one of the most advanced smartwatches on the market. Last year they left this fair after bringing one of the most pleasant surprises: the circular design of their watch. Now they go back to betting on this format and its rotating crown as a control, which has certainly been intuitive.

This new watch will hit the market in two models. The classic model and the Frontier model, more sporty in nature. The difference between the two? A few grams of weight (57 versus 62) and appearance. The screen in both cases will grow from 1.2 inches to 1.3 inches. In a mobile phone these figures would be insignificant but in the case of a machine designed for the wrist, it is a remarkable difference, offering more surface to show information and interact with the screen.

The dial of the watch adopts a more traditional look, more than clock and less than smart watch. And Samsung says they want to find the key to really wearable technology.

The interior of the Gear S3 will come equipped with a dual-core processor, 768 MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. Now you will be able to measure height and speed thanks to the sensors it includes.

The greatest achievement of this new watch is the battery. The previous model of media lasted two days, three if one made a scrupulous use of energy expenditure. Now, with a new 380 mAh battery, it promises between three and four days of autonomy.

In addition to altimeter and speedometer, will come with integrated barometer and GPS. The resistance to water and dust is IP68, the highest level that is used today in consumer electronics. It will also include microphone and speaker, so that it will be used to hold conversations.

It will arrive with a handful of new features, including the possibility of activating -not just managing- the music of the phone (also with Spotify) or the possibility of launching an SMS of help with our location. Something ideal for mountaineers and extreme sports enthusiasts. Among others, it will have an 'always on' screen, so that the sphere will always remain visible. In addition, you can use any 22 mm belt, something that in the previous version was limited to the Classic model.

The operating system will be Tizen. Samsung decided at the time to stay out of Android Wear and the truth is that this decision has allowed it to move more quickly and placed as one of the main players in the market of wearables with its own solution. The challenge of this bet: the applications. They ensure that the Gear S3 will arrive with 10,000 compatible apps. The when and how much are still unsolved questions.
